G7 Renewables Energies will own, build, and operate the 140MW Karreebosch Wind Farm.
On 19 February 2025, G7 Renewable Energies Pty Ltd, Cennergi Holdings Pty Ltd (a wholly owned subsidiary of Exxaro Resources Limited) and Northam Platinum Holdings Limited, announced the finalisation of a power purchase agreement for the 140MW Karreebosch Wind Farm, which will supply clean, renewable energy to Northam’s mining operations. It will deliver 460GWh of electricity per year to Northam.
The facility is located 45km north of Matjiesfontein and extends across the border of the Western and Northern Cape provinces.
The Karoo region in South Africa is known for having substantial wind energy potential. The Karoo has favourable wind conditions that make it suitable for the development of wind farms. The area’s relatively flat and open terrain, combined with consistent wind patterns, contributes to its attractiveness for wind energy projects. Several wind farms have been proposed and developed in the Karoo region to harness its wind energy potential. These projects contribute to South Africa’s efforts to diversify its energy mix and increase the share of renewable energy in the overall electricity generation.
About Karreebosch:
- The facility has more than 10 years of wind data measurements available.
- Maximum project size/export capacity will be 140MW.
- The facility will provide renewable energy for 20 years and more at a cost-competitive price.
- The Karreebosch Wind Farm will feature state-of-the-art wind turbine technology. It will feature 25 Goldwind turbines, each with a 165-meter rotor diameter, designed to maximise performance in local wind conditions.
- Goldwind will serve as the turbine supplier and installer.
- Concor, as the balance of plant contractor, will oversee all civil and electrical works on-site, including the critical grid connection.
